Jesus, First In All Things
Colossians 1:15–29
We spend much of life trying to bring things into focus, searching for clarity, control, and a sense that we’re not missing something. But in Colossians 1:15–29, Paul centers everything on one reality: Jesus is first in all things.
“He is the image of the invisible God… For by Him all things were created… all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Col. 1:15–17). Jesus is not just part of the story. He is the originator and sustainer of all things. Everything begins with Him, continues through Him, and exists for Him.
And this same Jesus is the reconciler. “Through Him [God] reconciled to Himself all things… making peace by the blood of His cross” (Col. 1:20). Then Paul makes it personal: “And you… He has now reconciled… in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him” (Col. 1:21–22). This means your life is not self-defined. It belongs to Him, and your standing with God is already secured in Christ.
That truth reshapes everything. If Jesus holds all things together, then you don’t have to. The pressure to control your future or prove your worth begins to loosen. You are already reconciled, already accepted, and being held together by Him.
Yet we are constantly tempted to believe there is something more. A deeper truth. A better version of ourselves just out of reach. But Paul reminds us: the gospel is not lacking. Your identity is not achieved. It is received.
So the call is simple: don’t shift from the hope of the gospel (Col. 1:23). Start with Jesus. Put what you’re carrying on Him. Stay rooted in Him.
Because when Jesus is first, everything else finally finds its place.
