3 Ways to Remain Watchful
Remaining Watchful: Thomas Boston’s Three Dimensions of Watchfulness
One of the most overlooked disciplines in the Christian life is watchfulness. In Colossians 4:2, Paul exhorts believers to be "watchful" in prayer, living with spiritual awareness and attentiveness to God's activity in the world.
The Scottish pastor and theologian Thomas Boston helpfully organized biblical watchfulness into three categories: things we must watch over, things we must watch against, and things we must watch for. Together, they provide a practical framework for living awake to God's work and alert to spiritual realities.
1. Watch Over What God Has Entrusted to You
Before believers can effectively engage the world around them, they must pay careful attention to their own souls.
Watch Over Yourself
Boston begins with the believer's own life:
The Christian life requires more than occasional self-reflection. It calls for ongoing spiritual vigilance.
Watch Over Your Graces
Faith, love, humility, patience, and joy do not thrive accidentally. Like a garden, spiritual growth must be cultivated and protected.
Watch Over Your Duties
Prayer, Scripture reading, worship, fellowship, evangelism, and service should not be neglected. Watchfulness guards us from drifting into spiritual complacency.
Watch Over Your Attainments
Growth in godliness should be maintained and strengthened. We must guard against losing ground spiritually through neglect or pride.
2. Watch Against Spiritual Dangers
The Christian life is not only about nurturing what is good. It is also about resisting what seeks to destroy our fellowship with Christ.
Watch Against Sin
Boston specifically warns believers to watch against:
Watch Against the Appearance of Evil
Believers should exercise wisdom, avoiding situations that compromise their witness or invite unnecessary temptation.
Watch Against Occasions of Sin
Often the wisest response to temptation is not resistance but avoidance.
Watch Against Temptations
Satan's schemes rarely arrive announcing themselves. Watchfulness helps us recognize temptation before it gains a foothold.
Watch Against Harmful Influences
The company we keep shapes the people we become. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that influences matter.
3. Watch For God's Activity
Watchfulness is not merely defensive. It is also expectant. Christians are called to look for ways God is working and opportunities to join Him.
Watch For the Right Time to Act
There are moments when God opens unique doors for obedience, service, encouragement, or gospel witness. Watchful believers recognize those moments.
Watch For the Spirit's Leading
God often nudges His people through conviction, burden, opportunity, and the illumination of His Word. Watchfulness helps us discern His direction.
Watch For God's Providence
Boston encourages believers to carefully observe God's dealings in their lives. As we reflect on His providence, we learn to recognize His faithfulness and guidance.
Watch the Fruit of Your Labor
Pay attention to how God answers prayer, changes hearts, and advances His purposes. Noticing God's work fuels gratitude and strengthens faith.

Watch Against Sin
Boston specifically warns believers to watch against:
- The sinful tendencies of their nature.
- Former sins that seek to regain influence.
- Particular temptations unique to them.
- Even seemingly "small" sins. Many spiritual failures begin with sins we considered harmless.
